How to Choose the Best Skin Treatment

new skin treatments

A new way of looking at skin treatments, part 2

With so much choice available, selecting a skin treatment can be difficult and confusing for patients.

There’s now a vast range of treatments available for improving the appearance of the face and the condition of the skin. As well as injectable treatments, there are also high tech laser options and powerful skincare products to consider.

It can be difficult to work out what’s best.

This situation is heightened when social media has an influence. Platforms such as Instagram and Facebook are full of before and after photos, as well as recommendations about the best treatment to choose. Advice from influencers, other practitioners and  Last week Dr John Tanqueray explored the issue in his article ‘Why We Should Ignore Before & After Instagram Photos

How We Should Be Choosing A Treatment

In part 2 of this series, Dr Tanqueray looks at how clients can discern what’s best for them.

“It is crucial to start with a clear idea of the result you would like to achieve and then build a treatment plan around this. There is no point in considering a skin peel to treat problems related to loss of volume, which will require filler treatment.

“There is rarely a perfect treatment, and decisions need to be made based on an understanding of what the treatment involves, how well and how quickly it will work, what side-effects are likely or possible, how many treatments are required, and of course cost.

“Let’s take “improving skin texture” as an example. The list of possible treatments that we offer is long: ZO skincare, Revive, Profhilo, Plenhyage, Ultherapy, Tixel, IPL, Laser, Plexr, microneedling, dermal filler and botulinum toxin.

“If we look at Plexr and ZO skincare, the first is quite aggressive with considerable downtime and certain risks whereas the second is very benign and safe but will deliver slower and steadier results. All the other treatments fit somewhere in between these two extremes.”

Private Consultation

In terms of working out the best approach, a consultation with a highly experienced skin expert is highly recommended as the first step.

This will involve close examination of the skin using the latest equipment, as well as discussion about what the patient would like to achieve or improve. Every person has a different set of requirements and understanding the goals and objectives is key to giving the right advice following a comprehensive skin review.
