Rosacea – Reddening of the Skin

Rosacea is a condition that gives rise to redness, flushing and visible facial veins.

It is more common in females, and can be quite socially-disabling as very often the problem becomes much more noticeable with alcohol, spicy foods or coffee. Other factors that often play a part are sun exposure and temperature changes.

The first step in tackling the problem is to fully understand the condition with a proper diagnosis.

There are 4 types of rosacea:

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea – the most common type. Patients have redness especially at the centre of the face in addition to a burning sensation, flaky skin and poor skin texture
  2. Papulopustular rosacea – as well as redness, there are papules and/or pustules (like very large and tender spots)
  3. Phymatous rosacea – the skin looks bumpy as well as red. Often the nose can look swollen and red too – this is known as ‘rhinophyma’. Cheeks, ears and chin may also be affected
  4. Ocular rosacea – spider veins around the eye area including eyelids, often with a burning, stinging or itching sensation and watery eyes

Patients with rosacea can be reassured that they will find high standards of knowledge about their condition. Dr John Tanqueray is a former GP who has extensive experience of treating skin conditions and has undergone additional training so that Mulberry House Clinic could become an Accredited Treatment Centre of the Acne and Rosacea Association UK (ARA UK).

Rosacea is a difficult problem to treat with conventional medications, and usually when someone comes to see us they have already tried a variety of treatments to no avail.

The good news is that there is a range of appropriate treatment options that can be quite effective in reducing the redness/flushing and promoting a healthier tone and appearance to the skin.
