It IS worth taking collagen supplements!

skin qualityCollagen supplements have gained traction in the anti-aging world as patients and practitioners start to increasingly consider longevity and how to achieve a more youthful self.

It’s not all about achieving youthful glowing skin – there are sound biological and health factors in favour of collagen too.

6 ‘longevity’ reasons for taking collagen

Here are a few reasons why collagen might be worth considering:

  1. Potential for Skin Improvements:
Studies suggest collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity and hydration, reducing wrinkles and dryness. This translates to a firmer, plumper appearance.
  2. Promotes Healthy Joints:
Collagen is a major building block of cartilage, the spongy tissue that cushions your joints. Supplements may help reduce pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis by supporting joint health.
  3. Supports Strong Bones:
Collagen plays a role in bone structure and density. Though research is ongoing, some studies suggest collagen intake might improve bone mineral density, potentially reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
  4. May Improve Muscle Mass:
Collagen is a protein found in muscles. Early research suggests collagen peptides might enhance muscle mass and strength, especially when combined with exercise [6]. Maintaining muscle mass is important for overall health and function as we age.
  5. Wound Healing Benefits:
Collagen plays a crucial role in wound healing. Supplements may contribute to faster healing and improved tissue regeneration after injury.
  6. Gut Health:
Collagen may contribute to a healthy gut microbiome by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. A healthy gut is linked to overall well-being and potentially, longevity.

Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress

Dr John Tanqueray attended the Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress last month, where collagen and longevity featured much more prominently in the anti-ageing discussions.

“We’ve been asked a lot lately about whether collagen supplements are worthwhile. Some people have reported noticing a benefit to hair, nails and sometimes their skin but the big question has been “is it worth it?”

“The latest research suggests that taking 2.5-5g of hydrolysed collagen every day is beneficial. The source of the collagen is not important, so beef, marine or vegan is all fine, but it must be hydrolysed, which means that the amino-acid chains are short and absorbed easily.

“There are a bewildering number of collagen products available – we have found a product that appears to be cost-effective and claims to be superior to more expensive options, Wellgard PureCollagen.

“In addition to collagen co-enzyme Q10 200mg daily becomes more important to supplement as we get older, more-so for someone taking a statin. Other supplements to consider include vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, and magnesium.

“Unfortunately there does not appear to be a single source that will provide all of things we need, so we have to build your own regime it seems.

“For the time being we have both started taking collagen and co-enzyme Q10 daily while trying to eat a healthy mixed diet.”
