Why We Should Ignore Before & After Instagram Photos

A new way of looking at skin treatments, part 1

Dr John Tanqueray MB BCh MRCGP DCH DRCOG DipOccMed BCAM has over 20 years experience in the field of medical aesthetics. In that time, he’s seen cosmetic and anti-ageing skin treatments become much more commonplace.

As a former GP, he advocates high standards and has previously shared his concerns about the lack of regulation in the industry and suggestions that the government should bring in licensing for non-surgical treatment providers.

Until then, he works hard to share information that will help those seeking injectable, laser and other skin treatments to make wise decisions. Both in terms of medical safety and also the finished aesthetic appearance.

In a new series of articles, he shares his views on:

“A new way of looking at skin treatments”

Why We Should Ignore Before & After Instagram Photos

Part 1 looks at how Instagram plays a role in how clients request a treatment

“It is not unusual that we have someone attend us for the first time asking for a specific treatment because they’ve seen it online, read about it in a magazine or a friend has had it. However they are often not clear what they want the treatment to do, or they have an unrealistic expectation about what it will achieve.

“In the Instagram age treatments are usually promoted based on a celebrity endorsement or some impressive (or too good to be true?) before and after photos. This can increase awareness and demand, and helps the brand gain traction.

“But there are real problems with this approach:

  • It’s very rare to see before and after photos that appear truly accurate – different lighting, angle and head position can easily mislead
  • Before and after photos usually show the best possible outcome, but can suggest that everyone can benefit in the same way, which is not the case
  • Its important to remember that results with most treatments have more to do with the skill and experience of the practitioner than the intrinsic property of the treatment itself”

In future blogs Dr John Tanqueray will explore more on how we should be choosing a skin treatment.

In the meantime, John has produced a series of guides to help patients understand more about choosing skin treatments:
