ZO Radical Night Repair Results

Review

Dr John Tanqueray shares his personal experience of using ZO Skin Health Radical Night Repair during the coronavirus quarantine/lockdown.

Radical Night Repair is one of the flagship products from the ZO range – a cleverly-formulated 1% retinol that targets both the superficial skin (epidermis) and the deeper skin (dermis) to promote increased turnover for a thicker firmer skin surface, lifting unwanted pigmentation, and also stimulating the deeper layers for increasing collagen production and reducing sun damage. In addition anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories add ongoing protection to the skin.

Redness, flaking and irritation for the first 4-6 weeks is inevitable when your skin isn’t used to it. Understandably this can be a barrier for people who can’t manage the side-effects while living their normal daily lives.

Being isolated at home for the last few weeks gave me the perfect opportunity to try using Radical Night Repair as a peel.

What is involved?

There are a few different ways that RNR can be used to promote a stimulation/exfoliation in the skin.

Before using the Radical Night Repair as a peel the skin must already be tolerant to retinol. I use Wrinkle and Texture Repair (previously called Retamax) regularly so my skin is well-acclimatised.

The peel involves applying high doses of Radical Night Repair each morning and evening over a 3- or 5-day period.

My 5 Day Programme

I used a 5-day programme of:

  • Cleanser AM and PM
  • Daily Power Defense – 1 pump AM and PM
  • Radical Night Repair – 8 pumps AM and PM (I could have used anything from 5 to 12 pumps – usual dose is just 2 pumps at night)
  • Hydrating Cream was very comforting for the few days when the skin was red and irritated

I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive as 16 pumps per day is a lot!

As it turned out I found it fairly straightforward:

  • Day 1-3: no reaction
  • Day 4-7: skin was fairly red, dry and felt a bit irritated, itchy and tight, but with cleanser and a light scrub the surface flaking was easily managed and my skin felt and looked fresher and firmer.
  • Day 7 on: everything had settled

I was cautious about sun exposure but continued to exercise throughout the process and even quite vigorous workouts did not make my skin sting.

The Conclusion?

My skin looks brighter and fresher and feels very smooth. Pores are reduced and even the lines on my cheeks and around my eyes are softer.

I will now be able to tolerate RNR as a regular nightly treatment and expect to see further benefits over the coming weeks and months.

Will I now recommend the “at-home peel”?

Absolutely, for someone who wants benefits over and above what can be achieved with zero downtime treatments like lighter peels or microdermabrasion, and are willing to have a few days of redness/dryness.

If you are already using a retinol regularly you will have little problem with this, and will only experience a few days of side-effects, which from my experience were not very significant (but bear in mind that individual experience will vary).

I like that you can tailor the approach to suit your skin and your willingness to accept side-effects. For example a 3-day programme on 5 pumps twice daily will be fairly mild compared to a 5-day programme using 12 pumps twice daily.

Once you’ve been through the process you should be able to tolerate Radical Night Repair easily, and can then ramp up the treatment from time to time when you can afford a few days of redness.
