Acne Scarring

Acne can seriously affect people’s lives and self-confidence, but one of the worst aspects is that it can leave permanent scarring, even after the acne itself has cleared up.

Acne scars develop when acne breakouts and inflammations damage the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. When the skin is repeatedly inflamed, as is the case with severe or prolonged acne, collagen fibres can break down, resulting in a loss of the skin’s structural support. This can lead to depressions in the skin or the else the formation of raised and thickened areas where the body has produced too much collagen in an attempt to heal the damaged tissue.

Another factor that can contribute to acne scarring is the picking or squeezing of pimples. This can introduce bacteria, allowing infection and inflammation, as well as causing damage to the skin, leading to the formation of scar tissue.

Appearance of acne scars

Acne scarring is quite different to normal scars (i.e. those that remain after injury). While normal scars are usually flat and fade over time, acne scars can be raised, indented, or discoloured.

There are three main types of acne scars:

  • Ice pick scars: These are small, deep scars that look like small holes in the skin.
  • Rolling scars: These are scars that have a rolling or wavy appearance.
  • Boxcar scars: These are scars that are indented and have well-defined edges.

The resulting area of skin has different texture, being firmer and less elastic; different contours, with pitting or raised scars; and loss of elasticity.

Treatment for acne scars and other scars can deliver a big improvement.

Acne Scarring Treatments To Consider:

Acne scarring may improve over time, but in many cases, it will not completely disappear on its own. If you are concerned about the appearance of acne scars, it is best to seek advice from someone who understands the very specific nature of acne scars, as well as offering a selection of different treatment options.
The severity of your scarring and your skin type will affect how much improvement you can expect.

The best treatment for acne scarring depends on the severity of the scarring and the type of scar. If you are bothered by acne scars, talk to Dr John Tanqueray about treatment options.
