Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet rich plasma therapy is an incredibly versatile treatment which uses the body’s own healing power from refined plasma, rich in powerful platelets.

PRP can be used for a range of requirements:

  • Improving the texture of the skin
  • Better skin-tone
  • Firming the skin
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Volumising the deeper layers to increase support under the skin

Platelet rich plasma consists of key cells and proteins which are extracted from a blood sample taken in the clinic just prior to treatment. The blood fraction we use – PRP – is known to accelerate normal healing pathways and when injected into the skin it will stimulate and restore it.

PRP Skin Treatments

Platelet rich plasma therapy can be used to improve skin virtually anywhere on the body. The main areas we treat at Mulberry House Clinic are

  • Ageing around the eyes
  • Lines/wrinkles around the mouth
  • Full face
  • Décolletage/neck/chest
  • Hands

Other potential areas are:

  • Cheeks and midface
  • Jawline
  • Back of arms

Advantages of PRP:

  • As your own blood components are used and nothing is added it is completely natural and safe
  • It can be used on any area of skin – the main areas are eyes, face, neck, décolleté and hands
  • In particular it can be used for the delicate skin both just below and above the eyes – these are areas that have traditionally been very difficult to treat effectively
  • Platelet rich plasma therapy can be used both for skin texture and volume
  • Downtime is short, usually some puffiness or blotchiness for 1-2 days
  • We believe it is very cost-effective, costing little more than Botox and offering results for up to 18 months

PRP (Platelet Rich plasma) is a concentration of human platelets (PLT) in a small volume of plasma.

The body’s first response to soft tissue injuries is to deliver platelets to the area. These platelets are packed with growth and healing factors which work to repair cells. The same healing principle can be used for skin rejuvenation and healing in aesthetic treatments.

A small sample of blood is taken from the patient. It has to be their own blood (autologous). This means that not only is there no risk of transmissible infectious agents but also no risk of immune rejection.

The blood sample is then prepared using a centrifuge, which spins the blood at high speeds, separating the platelets from the other blood components to create a preparation which is very highly concentrated with healing platelets.

No, the sample is taken and treatment given during the same appointment.

The Tropocells (PRP) treatment is prepared while you are waiting for the anaesthetic cream to work.

Your blood consists of four main constituents: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. When the blood is prepared, the centrifugal process filters out the red and white cells, leaving a refined plasma which is very rich in platelets.

The concentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP) is usually injected into and around the treatment area, where it works to start the body’s natural healing processes.

Surprisingly little. The doctor will normally draw 10 to 20 milliliters of your blood, using a standard procedure (just like taking a standard blood test).

Of course, it does depend how large the area being treated is.  One blood sample can treat a couple of areas, such as eyes/cheeks, forehead/neck or mouth/eyes. For a full face treatment, we’d generally take a couple of samples.

No, it’s generally very quick and fairly comfortable, as our doctor and nurse team have many years experience in taking blood samples. If necessary, we can use a numbing cream.

Formerly known as MyCells, Tropocells is a brand name relating to an innovative blood cell separation technology used in Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. It refers to the process used in creating the platelet rich plasma ready for treatment.

We usually add a small amount of local anaesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable, but otherwise nothing extra is added.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been used for rejuvenation purposes as well as to promote healing in surgery for several years. The Tropocells brand relates to the specialised tube that separates the blood components, and this is a more recent innovation.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been used in many medical procedures over the years and has been used for some time in medical fields such as orthopaedic and maxillo-facial surgery.

It was originally developed for patients with burns, as the PRP can be used to encourage the skin’s regeneration. Other medical applications include wound healing, sports injuries and even joint surgery. PRP also has medical uses in treatment of acne, acne scarring, flushing and even hair loss.

At Mulberry House Clinic, we offer PRP for the skin treatments listed above.

The procedure was made famous after certain Hollywood stars spoke about the treatment, describing their blood being injected back into their face.

However, please don’t worry about being smeared with blood. It is actually a very clean procedure. Firstly, it only uses the very refined platelet rich plasma, rather than the whole of the blood. Secondly, the PRP solution tends to be injected back, rather than externally applied, for a very precise delivery of the platelets right into the skin’s mid-layer.

What’s more, do bear in mind that the procedure has become very popular due to its effectiveness – it can deliver some very good results.

Some people do refer to PRP as a stem cell facelift and there will be some stem cells in the plasma. However the amount of growth factors carried within the platelets is far more significant in the regeneration process.

Usually you will notice initial improvements in skin texture, tone and radiance within three weeks.

Regeneration of collagen takes around three months. New collagen will make the skin look and feel firmer and tighter.
