Microneedling

Microneedling Therapy uses miniscule needles to stimulate the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely. The technique which is tried, tested and trusted for a variety of skin conditions.

The result is smoother, brighter, healthier and younger-looking skin. As well as helping with ageing or sun-damaged skin, Microneedling is also very helpful in the treatment of acne scarring.

Microneedling uses a specially-designed device to create multiple fine needle-points in the skin over the course of a treatment that lasts about half an hour. These tiny “injuries” then stimulate the repair and regeneration process, which takes place over the following few weeks with further improvement over a series of treatments. Although it sounds as though it might be painful and unpleasant our clients have found it genuinely relaxing – because the needling is quite superficial local anaesthetic cream works very well.

We like this treatment because it is safe and recovery time is brief, with some redness rather like sunburn that is most pronounced for a couple of hours, settling completely over the next day of two.

Compared to aggressive laser treatments that might otherwise be used, Microneedling avoids the risks, downtime and considerable costs involved.

Microneedling FAQs

Your Microneedling questions answered

This is a treatment that stimulates skin regeneration and repair through micro-surgical needling using a specially-designed device. The needles and very fine and penetrate the upper part of the skin only, making this a comfortable treatment. “No pain, no gain” really doesn’t apply!

The device is sterile and completely safe.

The creation of multiple fine needle channels stimulates healing/repair processes in the skin so that renewal takes place and new collagen is laid down and the blood supply improved.

It does sound uncomfortable, but we use a special numbing cream prior to treatment, which makes it quite manageable.

We used to use Genuine Dermaroller, which is a well-known brand in the UK.

However, we have now moved towards Derma FNS (Fractional Needling System). This is a motorised device which offers a number of advantages to the Dermaroller system. It is more comfortable, effective, efficient and precise.  It also causes less trauma to the skin, so any downtime and recovery are shorter.

You can now purchase rollers to use on the skin at home, but these are not the same as the medical-grade rollers in use at our clinic. Our rollers are genuine, top branded items which are designed for a deeper and more intensive treatment than the home rollers you may find on the internet.

Rollers that are for use at home are generally quite superficial, and help with the penetration of skincare products rather than have any effect on the skin.

What’s more, it isn’t easy to carry out rollering on yourself – the finish can be quite uneven. Just as you wouldn’t cut your own hair, so with microneedling having treatment carried out by a professional is likely to lead to a better result.

Microneedling provides a very safe treatment, and can be used on any skin type.

After treatment the skin looks quite red for a couple of hours. Much of this settles within a couple of hours, but some lesser redness may takes another day or two to settle – this is easily covered with makeup.

Prices do vary depending on the size of the area being treated. See our price list for more information on treatment prices.

The actual principle of Microneedling is exactly the same for the body as the face. The key difference is that a larger device tends to be used which will have bigger needles for deeper penetration of the skin. This helps to stimulate cell renewal and repair as well as cellulite breakdown, depending on the treatment.

Without local anesthetic cream it would be quite uncomfortable, but a quick-acting anaesthetic cream means this treatment is genuinely comfortable – the only area where there can be some minor discomfort is around the mouth, but to date nobody has found this a problem.

Typically 3 treatments are recommended for rejuvenation treatments, and up to 5 for acne scarring. Results are usually seen from 6 weeks onwards
