The Growth of Cosmeceuticals

cosmeceuticalsThe cosmeceutical skincare industry is worth billions worldwide and growing fast.

The term ‘cosmeceutical’ has no strict definition but is generally accepted to mean a cosmetic or skincare product which has some medicinal value making it more effective than basic skincare.

The consumer expectation with cosmeceutical skincare is of better results from using more intensive or active formulations. Top brand cosmeceutical products often have published clinical studies to support their claims and some require a prescription or can only be dispensed by trained and approved practitioners.

Some of the better known ingredients in cosmeceutical products include:

  • Retinol, also known as Vitamin A1, has been shown to have a host of rejuvenating benefits, including stimulating skin cell repair and collagen production and boosting cell turnover for firmer, smoother skin. It could also help to fade acne scars, improve pigmentation.
  • AHAs, which stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acids, are used to exfoliate the skin, also unclogging pores and stimulating cell renewal. They can help to reduce the appearance of pigmentation and promote smoother skin, also aiding absorption of creams/serums. AHA products include:
    • Glycolic Acid
    • Lactic Acid
    • Azelaic Acid
  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant which can brighten skin tone, protect the skin from damage and also promote collagen production
