Threads & Threadlifting

Update and Important Information

from Dr John Tanqueray

Threadlifting

Threadlifting in various forms has been available for some time now, previously in the form of permanent sutures inserted under the skin. About 5 years ago threadlifts became more widely available as absorbable threads were introduced.

However threadlifting of any sort gives only a quite subtle lifting effect.

Threads for Collagen Stimulation

The idea of using threads to stimulate collagen within the skin originated in Korea. Having become popular there the ideas were taken up for use in Europeans, who have rather different skin types.

Where Koreans were using it mainly for skin texture and a little tightening, demand in Europe was more for a “facelift” effect, and threads promised to be the next Holy Grail.

We carried out a limited number of such procedures and John concluded that threadlifting in the face can deliver subtle results, but at much greater cost and lesser duration and effect than by using dermal fillers, which remains his preferred treatment for lifting.

Because there is usually less weight and less movement in the neck this is an area where we have seen more success, but still a lot of variation in how long the treatment benefit lasts.

Our Experience & Advice

Over recent years we have met a good number of people who have had the procedure done elsewhere but have felt very disappointed with the effect they have seen (not to mention the money they had spent), and we have a strong feeling that thread treatments are being over-promoted and often being used in people who are unlikely to achieve a satisfactory result.

The conclusion we came to some time ago is that for a small number of people threadlifting can be effective, but will generally cost twice as much as an equivalent result achieved with dermal filler, hence the numbers of treatments carried out at Mulberry House has been fairly low.

During this time we have continued to present threads as an option on our website, although often when meeting patients who are keen on the idea of threads have recommended more suitable alternatives.

New Regulations for Thread Lifts

There have recently been changes in regulation making it more difficult for medical practitioners to offer these treatments, and so we do not now offer threadlifts. Curiously (some would say outrageously) practitioners who have no medical qualifications are not covered by the same regulations and are able to continue to offer treatments without any checks and balances in place.

Advice on Threadlifts

Our advice to you would be to consider all options prior to deciding on thread treatments, and if you are still keen to undergo threadlifting treatment ensure that you see an experienced and registered practitioner.

We will always discuss treatments that we do not carry out as well as those we do, so will happily see you to answer any questions you may have.

Useful Information

Types/Brands of Threads

As we do not offer these treatments for the reasons outlined above. However, for patients looking for more information on brands of threads, the following may be useful.

FTC PDO Threads

This style of thread treatment is popular in Korean, where it is used for improving skin texture and a little tightening through collagen stimulation.

How FTC PDO Threads Work

Specially designed sutures and threads are inserted into the skin where they are used to stimulate the structure of the face for a more youthful look.

The interruption of the surface of the skin and insertion of threads is intended to work within the skin, stimulating cell renewal and collagen production so that the skin naturally renews, generating a smoother, firmer and tighter texture; smoothing out signs of ageing for more youthful look.

Uses for FTC PDO Threads

PDO thread treatments are marketed for patients who are seeing signs of facial ageing. The suggestion is that this use of threads can subtly improve face or neck without the need for surgery and can improve a variety of conditions and areas which may include:

  • General skin tightening
  • Improvement of mild skin laxity
  • Facial contour definition
  • Complexion, texture and skin quality improvement
  • Stimulation of collagen production
  • Fat reduction

Treatment Benefits

  • Fast recovery – low downtime
  • Gentle treatment technique compared to surgery
  • Threads are completely resorbed over about 6 months
  • Benefits last around 1-2 years
  • Proven suture material, used for 15 years in medicine

Our Verdict

  • Results we have seen have generally been disappointing
  • We favour use of cosmetic injections which can achieve excellent, natural-looking results at lower costs too
  • The benefits to your appearance as well as treatment benefits are rivalled or better with alternative treatments.

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift

SILHOUETTE SOFT® thread-based treatments claim to offer an effective yet much safer and gentler option than full face lift surgery for those patients with early signs of ageing.

How Silhouette Soft Treatment Works

The procedure uses one or more absorbable sutures to create a rejuvenating effect for the face and jawline by lifting the skin tissues.

As well as a lift, the suture itself stimulates collagen production around it in the following months, so that the skin regenerates, appearing plumper, tighter and firmer. In this way, results continue to improve.

Uses for Silhouette Soft

  • Non-surgical face lift – using threads to ‘lift’ the facial tissues to a higher position
  • Facial contouring
  • Lower jaw
  • Cheeks/cheekbones
  • Nasolabial fold (nose to mouth lines)

Treatment Benefits

  • Gentler and cheaper than full face lift surgery
  • Benefits last around 18 months
  • Proven suture material, well-known brand
  • Takes around an hour

Our Verdict

  • Results we have seen have generally been disappointing
  • Silhouette Soft is not as effective as a surgical face lift for medium or more advanced signs of ageing
  • Results straight after treatment can look quite unnatural and therefore downtime must be considered
  • Cosmetic injections can achieve excellent, natural-looking results at lower costs too
  • The potential uses and treatment benefits of Silhouette Soft are in our view rivalled or better with alternative treatments
  • We recommend liquid facelift carried out with advanced dermal fillers
