What are polynucleotides and how do they work?
Polynucleotides are long chains of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA and RNA. They are thought to work by stimulating the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, which are all important components of healthy skin, so there are regenerative benefits to the treatment.
Polynucleotides are also believed to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, so as well as anti-ageing treatments, they can be of benefit in the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema.
What is Profhilo and how does it work?
Profhilo is a hybrid molecule made up of equal parts of high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is found in the skin and other connective tissues. It is a powerful hydrator that can help to plump up the skin and reduce wrinkles.
Profhilo is also thought to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.

Are polynucleotides taking over from Profhilo?
Some suggest that Profhilo has been superseded by the regenerative potential of polynucleotide treatments. However, they are different products and both have a role to play. Selection of the most appropriate product will depend on the client – their skin physiology as well as their hopes and expectations for treatment.
Profhilo remains a good option for patients who are looking for a quick and effective way to hydrate their skin and reduce wrinkles. It can add subtle volume but is an excellent choice for restoring a healthy glow to the skin.
In comparison, polynucleotides are a good option for patients who are looking for a longer-lasting treatment that can improve the overall texture and appearance of their skin through regeneration of collagen and elastin.
