Getting older is inevitable. There are now a host of effective non-surgical treatments that can help to deal with the less welcome signs of facial ageing, but it’s not always easy to work out what you need.
Understanding what happens as your face and skin age helps to determine the best course of action.
As skin ages, skin cell renewal slows down. When cells reproduce at a slower rate, the amount of collagen and elastin in the skin diminishes. Collagen and elastin are vital to the skin’s structure and elasticity. Depleted collagen/elastin means that the skin becomes thinner and less elastic. It starts with fine lines and wrinkles then leads into looseness and sagginess.
Everyone’s experience will vary somewhat and lifestyle choices such as smoking and sunbathing can have a surprisingly significant impact on how youthful you look too. Hydration and diet also have an impact.
Stages of facial ageing
Ageing is a gradual process. If you see someone every day, chances are you won’t notice the change; but if you haven’t seen someone for a year or so, then you may well notice their skin starting to look less youthful.
The ageing process can be summarised in 3 stages:
- Early ageing
For most people, the first signs appear around the mid twenties. The skin begins to lose elasticity and lines and wrinkles begin to develop. Many patients first notice nose to mouth lines in their twenties and certainly during their 30s. They may not be too problematic initially, but tend to become deeper and more visible over time
- Middle age
In our 40s and 50s, the skin will continue to thin as production of skin cells, collagen and elastin is slower than in our youth. As a consequence, the skin loses volume, so facial contours such as cheekbones and jawline become less defined. Loose skin also means that forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet become more noticeable.
For those who have spent time in the sun, there may be some pigmentation issues such as sun spots and patchiness - Later years
During our 60s and beyond, skin ageing continues to become more noticeable. Lines and wrinkles deepen as well as becoming more numerous. Discoloration can become more of an issue and further loss of volume means that sagginess and lack of definition become more exacerbated
