Irritated Skin?
If you have suddenly found that your skin is itchy and inflamed, one possible cause that you may not have considered is a reaction to pollen, causing hay fever skin rash.
While the better known symptoms of hay fever are itchy eyes and violent sneezing, the common allergy to pollen can also affect your skin.
Many Brits have been spending longer outdoors than they’re used to If you’ve been spending time in the garden or maximising your 1 hour exercise sessions, then you’ll be exposing the body to pollen from trees, grass and plants.
Hay fever is a common condition which is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen. Most sufferers experience problems with their nose, eyes and throat; but some can also develop red, itchy patches on their skin. They can be raised and blotchy and in severe cases, they can even blister or crack.
Rashes caused by hay fever can occur either due to the pollen you breathe in or, more commonly, due to touching pollen or brushing against it. Some people don’t suffer from the sneezing or itchy eyes at all yet still have a skin allergy to pollen.
People who suffer from eczema as well as hay fever tend to be more prone to breakouts or general itchy and irritated skin caused by pollen exposure.
Avoiding Hay Fever Skin Problems
As with all cases of hayfever, there are a few practical measures that can help:
- Avoid prolonged exposure to pollen where possible
- Stay indoors with the windows shut on high pollen days
- Avoid walking through long grass or cutting the lawns, as these expose you to high levels of pollen – both inhaled and to the skin
- Protect the skin when outdoors – long trousers and long sleeves will cover the skin
- Simple and cheap antihistamines can be very effective in reducing the symptoms. A daily tablet will reduce your sensitivity to pollen
- Cold compresses can provide localised relief to the itching
- Moisturise the area well using a simple and non-irritating cream, as any dryness will exacerbate itching and slow down the skin’s recovery
- For severe cases, ask the chemist what is available over the counter for itchy skin
