What is Filler Fatigue and How to Avoid It

filler fatigueThe concept of ‘filler fatigue’ is a relatively new idea which describes undesirable consequences of overuse of dermal fillers.

The theory is that repeated over-injection of  fillers into the skin can stretch it and/or weigh it down, so that when the fillers wear off, it is looser than it was in the first place. The argument is that patients are then driven into a vicious cycle of needing ever-increasing amounts of filler to create the desired result and as the amount of volume increases, so does the skin’s stretch. Therefore excessive use of fillers could actually accentuate the continued ageing process, which already means that the skin will become looser over time.

It is worth noting that the argument for ‘filler fatigue’ is in part promoted by plastic and cosmetic surgeons, who advocate a surgical facelift for patients who reach a certain stage in the ageing process.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way.

How to Avoid Filler Fatigue

Dermal fillers are indeed a temporary solution for improving the appearance of the face as the skin starts to age. But in the right hands, the practice is far more sophisticated than simply replenishing lost volume.

Skilled practitioners like Dr John Tanqueray provide non-surgical facelift treatments which use very small amounts of filler in a more structural way. Injecting to key points in the face can provide a ‘lift’ effect which smoothes out skin and makes the whole face look younger and fresher. This technique avoids the potential ‘puffiness’ of overdone fillers, as it is not about volume at all. The ‘quality not quantity’ approach also prevents the stretching or weighting down of the skin that ‘filler fatigue’ would suggest.
