What are Polynucleotides? Anti-Ageing Innovation

polynucleotidesPolynucleotides are a newly emerging trend in anti-ageing injections, offering an appealing alternative option for skin rejuvenation and improvements in skin quality.

This blog investigates more about polynucleotides and how they can be used to revitalise the skin.

What are polynucleotides?

The science bit…

Polynucleotides (full name Polydeoxyribonucleotides) are long chains of nucleotides that make up DNA and RNA molecules.

They are unique because they contain sequences of different bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine/uracil) that carry genetic information and play a crucial role in various biological processes.

How do polynucleotides work in anti-ageing?

In anti-ageing treatments, polynucleotides are used for their ability to stimulate production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. As we age, the production of collagen and elastin decreases, leading to the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Polynucleotides can help to reverse these signs of aging by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

Polynucleotide-based products are injected into the skin using a fine needle, targeting areas with wrinkles or signs of ageing. The injections are usually fairly comfortable and can be done in a doctor’s office or clinic. The results of polynucleotide treatment can be seen within a few weeks of treatment and can last for up to 12 months.

The theory behind their use is that polynucleotides can interact with specific receptors on skin cells, promoting cellular regeneration and the production of new collagen and elastin fibres. This can result in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

What is the clinical evidence?

As a relatively new product, there is currently limited scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of polynucleotides in anti-ageing treatments. However, early studies have shown positive results in terms of reducing wrinkles and improving skin quality.

One study published in the journal “Aesthetic Dermatology” found that polynucleotide treatment significantly improved the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines in a group of patients.

Another study, published in the journal “Skin Pharmacology and Physiology”, found that polynucleotide treatment increased the production of collagen and elastin in the skin of patients with photoaging (skin damage caused by the sun).

Overall, the evidence suggests that polynucleotides can be an effective treatment for anti-aging. However, more research is needed to confirm the long-term safety and efficacy of polynucleotides. More rigorous and controlled studies are needed to establish their true benefits. We look forward to seeing the results.

Benefits of polynucleotides

Here are some of the benefits of using polynucleotides in anti-aging treatments:

  • They can stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which helps to improve skin elasticity and firmness.
  • They can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.
  • They can improve skin hydration and texture.
  • They can reduce inflammation and redness.
  • They can help to protect the skin from damage caused by the sun.

Are there any side-effects with polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are generally well-tolerated. There main potential side effects relate to the site of the injection i.e. redness, swelling, bruising. More serious side effects, such as allergic reactions, are rare. Any pre-treatment consultation should fully assess and explain any risks for the individual patient.

Polynucleotide Treatments Northamptonshire

Plenhyage XL at Mulberry House Clinic

Mulberry House Clinic based in Hardingstone near Northampton launched new Plenhyage XL in late 2022. Plenhyage XL is a Polynucleotide treatment which provides a true regenerative effect through use of DNA to alter the behaviour of skin cells and promote skin regeneration.

It is a versatile product which can be of benefit to almost anyone and is especially recommended for the face, under eye area, neck, décolletage and hands. The clinic has seen some outstanding results for its patients; including improvements to skin quality, thickness and hydration in addition to formation of new collagen.

Dr Tanqueray says:

“In general your expectation should be that whatever the condition of your skin prior to treatment you should expect a noticeable improvement, and benefit should be achieved whatever your age.

“In addition having better quality skin should enhance the effects of any other treatments, from filler or skincare to Tixel or Ultherapy.

“Plenhyage has been in use in Italy for the past 5 years and over 2 million treatments have been given with no reports of any significant side-effects.”

Cost for treatment currently is £275 per session for a standard area. The process usually involves 3 treatments, each 3 weeks apart, with a single maintenance treatment then every 6-12 months.
