Our 20th Anniversary! Aesthetic Reflections from Dr John Tanqueray

20th anniversary header

Mulberry House Clinic has hit a milestone with our 20th anniversary at the beginning of 2023. As well as something to celebrate its also a moment to reflect on progress made in medical aesthetics and what we can look forward to in the future.

Dr John Tanqueray MB BCh MRCGP DCH DRCOG DipOccMed BCAM is a former GP who founded Mulberry House Clinic in 2003. He remains the lead clinical practitioner and Medical Director.

For our 20th Anniversary, he shares his reflections on the changes that the aesthetics industry has seen.

If we think back to 2003 when I was looking at a new “Botox” treatment those around me thought I was mad to spend any time or energy on this celebrity fad. It was very much under the radar and for anyone having such treatment it was their big secret. There was no way of knowing what demand would be, and of course word-of-mouth was unlikely to be a good marketing option!

Collagen fillers were still being widely used – they lasted only 3 months and brought quite high risks of allergic reactions. Fortunately as we were starting a brand new revolutionary filler made of hyaluronic acid was released –  the term hyaluronic acid is now widely recognised, and its been incorporated into many skincare brands.

Back then there was no official training in Botox or fillers, and the learning curve was very steep. With fillers the only areas we could treat were the naso-labial folds and lips, with a grand choice of just two fillers to do this.

20 Years of Progress

I’m not sure anyone would have predicted where we would be 20 years later. The whole aesthetic arena has grown exponentially with ever more treatment options as well as clinics offering them.

  • There are now said to be over 400 different fillers available, not to mention many that are imported illegally because they are so cheap. Some manufacturers would like us to believe that fillers are all the same, but there are many reasons why they are not.
  • Instead of 2 choices of botulinum toxin we now have 5, with more to come, and again a number of illegal imports available.
  • The growth in the number of clinics and the range of people offering treatments has been exponential – so much so that training companies are being set up by people who have themselves only undertaken basic training and have no experience with day-to-day treatments.

However there have been many positive developments:

  • With better understanding of anatomy we can use fillers anywhere on the face for more comprehensive and natural results.
  • Responsible pharmaceutical companies have funded research and education that supports reliable products and safer practices.
  • Newer treatments have been developed that focus on stimulation of tissue for natural and sustainable results.
  • The addition of portable ultrasound has made the assessment and treatment of occasional complications much more effective.

Future Predictions for Aesthetics?

With 20 years experience, we have certainly seen a lot of change in the aesthetics industry. Over the next couple of weeks, Dr John Tanqueray will share his insights and predictions into what the next 20 years could bring.

Until then, a massive ‘Congratulations’ to Mulberry House Clinic on achieving 20 years of progress.

The team would like to extend its thanks to all patients who have shared the journey.
