Why choose a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are best known for their exfoliation purposes. They work by applying a chemical solution to the skin for a carefully calculated duration of time. This initiates a series of reactions within the skin:
- Sloughing off the outer layer of dead skin cells including build-up of makeup, pollution and grime
- Clearing pores and excess oil to decongest the skin
- Revealing fresher skin beneath for a more radiant look
- Boosting cell renewal processes including cell renewal, collagen and elastin production
- Brightening the appearance of the skin
- Helping to reduce superficial blemishes and pigmentation for a more even skin tone
The results can be significant with improvements to a host of common skin concerns such as fine lines, poor skin texture, sun damage and problems such as age spots, freckles and melasma. They generally improve the look of the skin but many patients also remark on how much softer and smoother the skin feels as well.
Gentle, medium or deep peel?
With such a choice of peels, it can be difficult to know which one to choose. One of the key aspects of that choice is the strength of the peel.
Superficial or gentle peels are a great choice for improving the skin with no downtime. However, for more intensive results, the medium, deep or adjustable peels will provide a more intensive experience. They use stronger formulations of acids and active ingredients and therefore have the potential to go further in tackling lines/wrinkles and pigmentation. As you’d expect, this means that they do have more ‘downtime’ and you can expect redness and visible peeling as the skin reacts to the peel process. See our previous blog Understanding Skin Peels – Superficial, Medium or Deep? for more information.
As well as selecting the most appropriate peel, another very important factor to consider is how long to leave it on. The longer a peel is left, the more it will penetrate the skin and act on the cells; so both the strength of peel as well as the timing need to be considered.
A third factor to consider is whether the peel is a ‘one off’ or whether results are being built up over a course of several sessions. This does also depend on the peel chosen, condition being treated and individual skin condition.
Expert advice on chemical peels
An extensive range of peels may be overwhelming, but there’s no need to worry. Our friendly team has plenty of experience and is happy to provide individual advice.
The starting point is to understand the condition of the skin and the concerns or problems being treated. Mulberry House Clinic will suggest the most appropriate options according to the individual client’s skin considerations, including key concerns, fitzpatrick skin type, signs of ageing, signs of photodamage (sun damage), hydration, skin density and more.

For patients who don’t like the idea of chemicals at all, there are now energy-based treatments that can offer similar results through application of heat or light. For example, Tixel, IPL or ResurFX laser skin resurfacing can also provide stimulate exfoliation and cell renewal.
