BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers Warning
Manufacture of counterfeit or fake goods is more commonly associated with clothing and perfume – but over the years, the UK has seen numerous seizures of non-surgical treatment products that are not authentic.
Clients attracted by cheap prices are warned to be alert for the risk that they may not be buying the real thing; and without that assurance, treatments could be not only ineffective but also highly dangerous. – especially when they are being injected
Counterfeit products are the most difficult to identify. These copy the name and packaging of the original product as closely as possible in order to look genuine. However, as counterfeit goods, the content and quality of the actual product is completely ungoverned. So for example, a glass vial could have BOTOX on the label and be presented in a BOTOX box, but the contents could be literally anything.
Previous cases have found that some counterfeit Botulinum Toxin products contained no actual toxin at all, so patients would have had no benefit from treatment. Perhaps more worryingly, some others contained toxin at significantly higher than the appropriate level, making them dangerous to the client.
Fake goods are given different names and branding. They may be somewhat similar to the original, but they don’t try to look identical. The implication is that clients can expect a similar product at a lower price. The fake product issue affects dermal fillers more than botulinum toxin, which is a prescription only medicine in the UK. Unlike botulinum toxin, there are many more brands of dermal fillers available in the world and many ‘fake’ products too. There are too many cases of clients being given fake dermal fillers that cause great difficulties. Some turn out to be permanent while others are poor quality or completely inappropriate substances.
How to avoid fake/counterfeit products
The key is to ensure you choose a reputable practitioner who only purchases from a reputable distributor. There are those who buy direct from dubious sources – often found on the internet and sent from overseas – if in doubt, ask your practitioner where they purchase from. They should be able to easily show evidence as to the origin of the product.
Never be tempted to source your own product for DIY treatment or to try and cut out the middle man by supplying your own product.
