Stress can be a big factor in a host of common skin conditions from acne and eczema to rosacea and psoriasis – as well as causing premature ageing. So it’s important to recognise it and take preventative action to keep your skin looking good and feeling great.
Stress triggers a chemical reaction in the human body leading to release of hormone cortisol. This is essentially the ‘danger signal’ to the brain which causes the ‘fight or flight’ type reaction as well as increased blood pressure and anxiety.
While this response is normal, natural and useful in the short term; prolonged stress means high levels of cortisol which can have a negative impact on the skin as well as general wellbeing.
Stress can cause:
- Premature ageing – lines and wrinkles
- Thinning of the dermis
- Itchy, sensitive skin
- More vulnerability to skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis
Treating Stress-Related Skin Issues
Prevention is better than a cure as the saying goes – so depending on the cause of stress, the first step would be ideal to pinpoint and then resolve any specific circumstances that have been causing stress.
This is not always possible, so the second step is to consider whether any lifestyle changes could help you to manage stress better. Things like mindfulness, meditation or yoga may help find an inner calm. Healthy diet and exercise may result in improving your sleep, making you more resilient. Depending on the issue, you could also consider speaking to a GP for help (e.g. antidepressants or a referral for psychotherapy/CBT can be considered).
The third step is of course to look at how the skin can be improved and here, the team at Mulberry House Clinic have a number of treatments that could help. For example:
- Signs of premature ageing can be treated with laser, IPL or popular wrinkle-relaxing injections such as BOTOX® or Dermal Fillers
- Eczema, rosacea and psoriasis can be improved with LED treatment which also boosts the skin’s general rejuvenation and recovery responses for a more radiant complexion
- Acne can be treated with Prescription Skincare, Microdermabrasion or a host of other options. Mulberry House Clinic is an ARA accredited Acne & Rosacea treatment
As a former GP, Dr John Tanqueray is ideally placed to understand the health and skin impacts of stress, providing advice which is in the patient’s best interest all round.
