Eczema

Eczema (also known as dermatitis) is a skin which can strike at any age causing misery for the patient. 

1 in 12 adults have eczema in the UK.

The name comes from the greek word ‘ekzein’, which means to boil – and indicates the intense sensations and symptoms it can cause.

Mild eczema is characterised by:

• dry, scaly skin
• redness
• itchiness

Moderate to severe eczema might have:

• weeping
• cracking
• pus filled boils
• bleeding
• intense itching

Scratching is very tempting to relieve the itch, but generally makes the condition worse by damaging the skin and making it more prone to infection.

Eczema Treatment

Tackling eczema can be a complex matter.

• Doctors will try to rule out any allergies or irritants.
• Moisturising the area is vital with a non-allergenic product (some eczema sufferers are even allergic to E45 so it is important to explore the options properly)
• Prescription creams/ointments, often steroid based
