Underarm Injections for a ‘Sweat Free Summer’

hyperhidrosis injectionsIf the prospect of warmer weather has you worried about problem sweating the you’re not alone; but hyperhidrosis injections could stop the excessive sweat for months at a time, keeping you dry and comfortable all summer.

Excessive sweating is a very troubling condition that can cause great embarrassment. We all need to sweat to a certain extent to regulate the body temperature. The hotter the weather the more we can expect to perspire .

However, when the amount of sweat is such that damp patches are noticeable and clothing gets ruined quickly, that can be very difficult for patients. It is frustrating when no amount of strong antiperspirant seems to contain the problem and can find it very awkward and difficult when sweat patches appear. It’s something that patients can worry about a lot, especially in a work or social setting.

Medically known as hyperhidrosis, the clinical condition of excessive sweating is thought to affect 1-3% of the UK population; yet many more struggle with embarrassing wet patches on clothing as antiperspirants are often not enough to stem the sweat.

Hyperhidrosis injections to stop sweating

Now that the UK population is returning to workplaces and socialising, skin clinics such as Mulberry House Clinic are seeing increased interest in treatments to reduce the problem.

The good news is that injections of botulinum toxin (BOTOX®) into the underarm area can be are an excellent choice and help many men and women to get through the summer without having to worry about the embarrassment and discomfort of sweaty armpits.

Around 15-20 injections are delivered each side. Once the botulinum toxin has taken effect (it takes a few days to build to maximum impact), it works to block the signals from the brain to the sweat glands. This significantly reduces the sweating process for months at a time to make it entirely manageable and for many clients, there is no sweating at all.

Having the treatment in late spring is ideal to enjoy the summer months ‘sweat free’ or at least with very little residual sweat.

When the injections start to wear off, treatment can be repeated if necessary. Once patients have discovered the freedom that comes with this treatment, many continue it year round in order to have the confidence to wear what they want, when they want. Others prefer just to have it once a year as a summer treatment to avoid being seen with sweat marks.

It can also mean less worry about the odour of sweat and the condition of the underarm skin can also benefit by keeping ‘cleaner’ without the build up of sweat, which can cause irritation to the skin.

Sweating Treatment Northampton

Mulberry House Clinic offer sweat reduction injections for the underarms with excellent success rates. Dr John Tanqueray at Mulberry House Clinic in Hardingstone is a highly experienced former GP who has treated many patients for excess sweating.

A consultation will include a full understanding of the condition and the practical problems the patient is experiencing. As a GP, Dr Tanqueray will also explore any potential underlying conditions.

If appropriate, injections can be carried out at the clinic and should give several months relief.

Other medical treatments for hyperhidrosis

If you visit the doctor for excessive sweating, you may be offered a different solution:

  • The most common route for doctors is to prescribe stronger anti-perspirant products, although many patients find that these cause intense skin irritation and still don’t give enough relief from the sweating problem
  • GPs can also prescribe anticholinergic or antimuscarinic medication, which works by blocking the effects of acetylcholine, which the nervous system uses to activate the sweat glands. However, side effects can be unpleasant
  • Iontophoresis is a treatment that may help reduce excess sweating on the hands or feet. It involves a weak electric current passed through water or a wet pad to help block the sweat glands. It is less common for the underarms
  • Surgery is an extreme solution and has fallen out of favour due to the complexity and potential complications
  • Where sweating is related to anxiety then CBT may be offered

Botulinum toxin injections for excessive sweating are considered an excellent solution, but they are not widely available on the NHS, which is why many patients turn to the private sector for treatment instead.
