Introducing Regenerative Medicine

Dr John Tanqueray’s latest update to our subscribers explored the concept of ‘regenerative’ medicine and aesthetics.

John says:

“If there was a straightforward way to restore healthy function to your skin cells for natural and lasting skin quality improvement everyone would want it – that option is now available!

The latest buzzword in medicine and aesthetics is“REGENERATIVE”.

Regenerative medicine is “the process of replacing, engineering or regenerating cells, tissues or organs to restore or establish normal function.”

Dermal fillers as a regenerative treatment!

Dermal fillers are an excellent way of restoring structure by replacing lost volume in the cheeks, temples or lips, but the behaviour of the cells in the skin (skin function) is largely unaffected.

We know that from our early 20’s cellular function slows and collagen stores deplete at about 1% per year – anything we can do to help reverse this will be helpful. If we simply rely on toxin and fillers natural ageing and environmental damage means our skin will still gradually become thinner and more fragile as collagen breaks down and cellular activity slows.

Regenerative treatment affects skin function by enabling fibroblast cells to actively produce collagen and natural hyaluronic acid, thereby keeping the skin looking and feeling firm and healthy.

There is now an effective regenerative treatment that is relatively convenient as it only requires treatment every 6-12 months and usually has little or no downtime. We are talking about Radiesse dilute.

What is ‘Radiesse Dilute’?

“Radiesse® is a very interesting product that we first used in the clinic when it gained approval in 2006. The science behind it is well understood. In its original form it acts as a filler with collagen-stimulating properties. When progressively diluted with saline it changes from a stiff gel (good at lifting) to a thinner gel (good for sculpting/shaping), and with further dilution it turns into a purely liquid collagen/fibroblast stimulator.

While we are using it predominantly in the face and neck it can be used anywhere on the body including the décolletage.

…and it gets more exciting:

When it comes to collagen stimulation by any method we know that some people respond less well than others. A recent paper has shown that by combining Radiesse with the raw materials your skin needs (amino acids, vitamins and minerals) the results are enhanced for everyone, including in post-menopause. Reduced hollowing, wrinkling and sagging, and increased skin luminosity should be achievable for everyone after one treatment.

Radiesse used in this way is effective on its own, but a study about to be published has shown that having Ultherapy one month before Radiesse treatment boosts collagen in the skin by an impressive 200%.

What does this mean for the future?

“We believe that interspersing “REGEN” (regenerative) treatments just once or twice a year in between using botulinum toxin and dermal filler for our more immediate needs will make a big impact over the long term.”
