What can Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Fix?

Sometimes referred to as a non-surgical nose job, rhinoplasty using dermal fillers is a versatile, safe and reliable treatment for improving a variety of concerns to improve the shape and profile of the nose.

male rhinoplastyOur previous blog ‘Nose Fillers’ – Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty looked in depth at the popularity of the treatment and its advantages for clients who are looking to address perceived issues with the shape of their nose.

The nose is a prominent feature, so it’s no surprise that so many people are keen to improve it. Reshaping the nose can make a big difference to the balance and aesthetics of the face overall, by adjusting the proportions and smoothing out noticeable irregularities.

Common Nose Shape Concerns

  • Humped nose
Where the bridge of the nose is pronounced it can create a humped effect, which is especially noticeable when viewed from the side
  • Wide/flat bridge
Where the bridge of the nose is wider and/or flatter than usual, patients can feel this lacks the right projection.
  • Upturned tip
The optimum nose shape has a roughly 90-110 degree rotation at the tip. When the angle is greater, too much of the underneath of the nose is visible. Unkindly referred to as a ‘piggy nose’
  • Downturned tip
Where the tip is less than a 90 degree angle, it points down, making the nose look overly long.
  • Saddle nose
A saddle nose is where a deep dip appears between the two high points of the nose (the bony upper area and the tip). It can be referred to as ‘boxer’s nose’ or ‘rugby player’s nose’, as it is often the result of some kind of accident or trauma. It can sometimes occur after overly aggressive nose surgery
  • Hooked nose
A hooked nose is where the bridge is very prominent. It may also be referred to as polybeak deformity.
  • Columella issues
The columella is the section of tissue which separates the nostrils at the base of the nose. The ideal aesthetic is when the columella is visible but not excessively so. A retracted columella is where it is less than 2mm and a hanging columella is where it protrudes too much
  • Asymmetric nose
If viewed from the front, the centre of the nose should fall in a vertical line. When it is not vertical, the nose is asymmetric or ‘crooked’ and this can affect the whole balance of the face
  • Bulbous tip
Where the tip of the nose is wider than the rest of it. It may have quite a rounded look.
  • Pinched tip
The opposite of bulbous tip, a pinched tip looks narrow and thin due to a smaller than average amount of soft tissue. It can look quite pointy and patients dislike the ‘mean’ look.

How can dermal fillers help reshape the nose?

It is important to note first and foremost that dermal fillers cannot address any functional issues, such as breathing problems. However, they can often improve the overall shape and profile to great effect. Dermal fillers only add more volume, but this could blend and smooth out any irregularities to improve the overall shape of the natural nose.

  • before and after non-surgical nose jobHumped nose – can be blended through addition of dermal fillers into the depressions each side of the nose, thereby creating a straighter profile.
  • Wide/flat bridge – can sometimes be built up with advanced filler, even though the skin is very thin in this area
  • Upturned tip – careful positioning of dermal fillers can lower the end tip of the nose to correct the angle
  • Downturned tip – dermal fillers can be carefully used to increase the angle for a more typically normal profile
  • Saddle nose – filler may be used to build up the ‘dipped’ area for a more normal profile
  • Hooked nose – dermal fillers can lessen the ‘hook’ effect by smoothing out the overall contours
  • Columella issues – dermal fillers may be a consideration in cases of both ‘retracted columella’ and ‘hanging columella’ for addressing imbalances
  • Asymmetric nose – artistic use of advanced dermal fillers may be helpful in adding volume to improve balance
  • Bulbous tip – in some cases, addition of dermal fillers could reduce the bulbous look of the natural nose
  • Pinched tip – in some cases, dermal fillers may be an option for building out the tip of the nose

Naturally, not all issues can be corrected using dermal fillers. However, they can in many cases effect worthwhile improvements.

A consultation with a practitioner who specialises in non-surgical rhinoplasty is recommended as the first step, to establish what can be achieved and what sort of results you might expect.

Nose reshaping is very much an advanced procedure. Many ‘injectors’ will not offer it, preferring to stick to the simpler lip and facial filler treatments. It’s important to choose a practitioner carefully. Ideally they should be medically qualified as well as trained in advanced filler procedures. In addition, look for someone who has carried out a good number of similar procedures and can show before/after photos of the results they’ve achieved.
