Male vs Female Facial Treatments

male botox injectionsWhen it comes to anti-ageing and cosmetic injectable treatments, every patient’s individual anatomy must be considered for best results. Physiological differences between men and women can affect how aesthetic treatment is carried out.

The numbers of men seeking anti-ageing and aesthetic treatment has increased rapidly over the last 10 years, as male grooming has become commonplace and with it many men are keen to look more youthful for the workplace and for their social environments too. There’s no stigma now attached to having treatments that give effective results.

Yet many practitioners treat an almost exclusively female clientele and are therefore unused to tailoring their injection techniques to suit the male anatomy.

There are a number of ways in which the male facial structure differs and it is important to enhance it accordingly without any unwarranted feminisation of features which may result from inappropriate unadjusted techniques. A good practitioner who is properly trained and experienced will understand the fundamental points of anatomy. However, it is also important to understand the patient perspective on what features they wish to emphasise and enhance, as this is equally if not more important than respecting the facial structure.

5 key points of male facial anatomy

There are five main areas to be considered which define the structure of the face

  1. Chin/jawline
In Western culture, the lower area of the face is associated with masculinity – many Hollywood actors have a ‘strong’ jawline and chin which provide definition to the facial structures. The male chin tends to project more and also be wider than a ‘softer’ female form. Dermal filler treatments and BOTOX can be used to either narrow or widen the chin. Fillers can also enhance its shape and projection, according to what the patient would like to achieve.
  2. Nose
Differences between the male and female nose are subtle but important, as the female nose tends to have a different angle of projection. While non-surgical rhinoplasty can be very effective in both men and women, it is important to consider whether the angle of projection should be adjusted too.
  3. Forehead
There are a surprising number of differences here. Female skulls have a rounded forehead (frontal bone) whereas the male head shape is less rounded and slopes backwards at a gentler angle. The ridge along the brow is more prominent in males and smoother in females. This has a bearing on how injectable techniques are delivered. Using dermal fillers to revolumise creases or using toxin for a brow lift must be done carefully to sympathetically respect the facial structure as well as the patient’s own views on what would be more attractive.
  4. Cheeks
For women, a high cheekbone is often considered a sign of beauty, yet for men, the classic look is more flatter and less rounded. Yet for both genders, this area of the face is one which can show the signs of ageing. Dermal filler treatments are an excellent solution for revolumising, but the method and area of injection tends to be quite different. For female patients, accentuating and lifting the cheekbone may be a focus whereas for men, it may be more about tackling deep hollows and/or creases.
  5. Lips
Lip filler is treatment which must be adjusted to the individual requirements, particularly where a male patient is seeking a little rejuvenating volume but wishes to avoid feminisation. For female patients, lip fillers add volume both to rejuvenate the lips and also to accentuate the shape for beautification; yet different techniques can be used to improve the male mouth area, smoothing out smoker’s lines or addressing imbalances between the top/bottom lip without inappropriate adjustment of the overall shape and projection.

There is a lot to consider, so it’s important to choose a practitioner who has the knowledge and expertise required to understand the anatomy and inject appropriately, based on detailed patient consultation and in depth understanding of what the patient wants to achieve.

Injectable treatments are an excellent way of rejuvenating and beautifying the face to improve its appearance, but the best results are when the treatment is completely appropriate and tailored to the patient.
