As the UK recovers from record-breaking temperatures, you may have noticed that your skin has suffered due to the effects of the heatwave.
If you feel your skin is lacking its normal radiance then you’re not alone.
Over the last few days, we’ve all got a bit more dehydrated than usual. Your skin has worked hard to perform its bodily function of keeping you cool and we’ve all sweated more than normal.
You may feel that the constant perspiration leaves your skin feeling sticky, even after a shower or a wash. The sweat means that your skin has probably struggled to shed skin cells in the normal way and a buildup of grime has developed.
Finally, while using sunscreen diligently is exactly the right thing to do, it can also leave greasy residue and add to the feeling that you’re wearing an extra layer and could be building up blocked pores.
Medical-grade exfoliation treatments
If you’re looking to ‘freshen up’ the way your skin looks and feels, then professional exfoliation treatments could be just the thing you’re looking for.
Former-nurse Liz Tanqueray works alongside Dr John Tanqueray offering light peels and microdermabrasion.
These work by sloughing away the top layer of skin, removing dead skin cells and buildup of grime and oils.
The process reveals brighter and newer layers beneath for an instant glow, leaving skin feeling softer and fresher. Immediately after exfoliation, dehydrated skin readily absorbs serums and lotions, which helps it to regain some of the moisture content it’s lost during the high temperatures.
Light peels and microdermabrasion treatments have a longer term benefit beyond the instant radiance. They also stimulate the skin in its production of new skin cells, which provides a longer term benefit in improving the condition of the skin.
These treatments have little to no downtime, so they’re ideal for a quick boost.
Peels vs Microdermabrasion
While they both work in exfoliating the skin, there are differences:
- Light chemical peels use a chemical agent to break down the outer layer of dead skin cells as well as buildup of grime, sweat and oil. Aggressive peels can involve a protracted period of ‘shedding’ while skin peels away, but our light peels are a very different experience. They’re only left on for a short time and are very well tolerated
- Microdermabrasion uses a mechanical device which works on stripping away the outer layer of skin cells, revealing brighter, newer skin beneath and leaving the skin feeling fresh, soft and smooth
Which to choose? While both treatment perform exfoliating on your skin, they do work in different ways. Depending on your skin condition and goals, it may be that one is more suitable than the other – or it could just be a matter of personal preference. Our skin treatment experts are always happy to give advice based on your skin type and treatment goals.
