Chemical peels are a fabulous treatment for brightening and stimulating the skin. They work by sloughing off the outer layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresher skin beneath, which also works to boost cell renewal processes.
During lockdown and for a few weeks after, we were unable to offer facial treatments like peels and microdermabrasion; but now these are available again we’ve found that many clients are choosing these professional exfoliation treatments as a way to boost and revive tired skin.
Chemical peels can actually achieve significant results in common skin concerns such as fine lines, poor skin texture, sun damage and pigmentation problems such as age spots, freckles and melasma. They generally improve the look and feel of skin.
Some clients are concerned about the short term effects of redness and visible peeling. If this is a worry, then it’s important to recognise that there are a variety of peel options with different strength. It is the more aggressive peels that may make you want to lie low for a few days, but the lighter peels have no downtime. The longer a peel is left, the more it will penetrate the skin and act on the cells. The strength of peel as well as condition being treated need to be taken into account. Some only need 1-3 minutes to act, while others are left for 10 minutes or more.

A course of peels is often more effective than a ‘one-off’, although this does also depend on the peel chosen, condition being treated and individual skin condition.
