Psychological Impact of Anti-Ageing Treatment
Researchers have shown a positive link between having wrinkle-reduction injections and a more positive state of mind.
In 2006, a study found that 9 out of 10 patients with major depressive order showed a reduction in their symptoms after having botulinum toxin treatment (aka BOTOX® or Bocouture). This has been supported by other studies, which showed that the the patients’ self-esteem tended to improve after having anti-ageing treatment with injections to smooth out lines in the forehead.
How Does BOTOX® Improve Mood?
The reason for the positive link between anti-ageing injections and mood is unclear, but there are a number of theories:
Theory 1 – ‘Look Good Feel Good’
The first theory is that improvement in positive outlook occurs when patients feel more attractive. The boost to self-confidence shouldn’t be underestimated and patients do report a psychological boost from having treatment.
Theory 2 – Facial Feedback
The second theory suggests that reduction in the face’s natural expression of negative emotions, such as anger or sadness, actually reduces those negative emotions.
Theory 3 – Neurochemical
The final idea is that botulinum toxin causes neurochemical changes in the brain. This connects to the idea of reduced negative expression suppressing the emotions behind it.
Is BOTOX® A Depression Treatment?
One of the conclusions suggested by researchers is that botulinum toxin could be a potential treatment for depression. In fact, it has been suggested that BOTOX® injections may even be cheaper than some of the alternative treatments.
In our opinion, this is an extremely sensitive area and while we’d agree that BOTOX® can be a mood-booster, it is by no means a solution for somebody who’s suffering with depression. Depression is an illness that affects many people and is rising both in the UK and worldwide, affecting more and more people of all ages.
Anyone prescribing or administering botulinum toxin should properly assess the patient prior to treatment to ensure that it is in their best interests both aesthetically and psychologically.
