As more and more patients demand subtle yet effective results, mesotherapy is emerging as a great non-surgical treatment with its ‘less is more’ approach to natural-looking antiageing results.
Mesotherapy is not new – it was first developed in the 1950s in France.
The term ‘meso’ refers to the mid layer of the skin, which is targeted in mesotherapy via delivering a carefully chosen substance directly into the skin’s mid layer. Here, the solutions can act straightaway where needed. The mid layer of skin can’t be penetrated by cream or serum, so delivering nutrients or solutions directly into the skin is a really efficient and effective principle.
Depending on the area or condition being treated, the exact mechanism can vary:
- Microneedling can be used to prepare the skin, creating a series of tiny channels before applying the serum/solution externally for it to be readily absorbed
- A series of multiple tiny injections into the dermis/epidermis may sometimes be a better approach to specifically target the treatment area
The delicate delivery of mesotherapy prevents over volumisation and gives subtle yet effective results.
Solutions may include vitamins, nutrients, medicines, hydration or a combination depending on the client’s requirements.
As well as delivering substances into the skin, there is another benefit to mesotherapy treatment. The physical act of breaking the skin’s surface, whether using a needle roller, microneedling pen or fine syringe, kick-starts the skin’s recovery mechanisms. This includes cell regeneration and production of collagen and elastin. The mesotherapy treatment also boosts blood flow in the area.
In the weeks following mesotherapy, the skin’s renewal leads to a range of potential improvements:
- Firmer skin texture
- Better hydration, reduced dry patches
- Brighter, more radiant skin; with improvements to pigmentation problems
- Reduced lines and wrinkles
- General rejuvenation of the skin
Medical Mesotherapy
Such is the potential for mesotherapy, that practitioners are still exploring and discovering new uses for the treatment. It can be helpful in improving a host of skin conditions and even medical conditions including:
- Acne and acne scars
- Cellulite, excess fatty deposits
- Stretch marks
- Alopecia (hair loss)
Studies have also found that mesotherapy could help with rheumatism, arthritis, muscle pain and sports injuries; as well as smoking cessation, allergies and ophthalmological pathologie
