The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin and is designed primarily to protect you.
The outer layer of skin provides the first layer of protection. It forms an external physical barrier containing 15-20 layers of dead skin cells which ultimately flake off as new layers form beneath.
With age, the outermost layer of the epidermis (known as the ‘stratum corneum’) does not flake as easily. Far from adding depth to the skin this creates a dull look and also causes the lower layers to slow down, contributing to the ageing process of the skin. The average skin cell journey from the innermost to outermost layer of skin takes around 4 weeks, but this could slow to over 2 months as a consequence of age and/or poor skin quality.
That’s why skin clinics like Mulberry House Clinic offer options designed to boost the epidermal layer by exfoliating to whisk away the outermost cells in order to reveal fresher skin beneath, simultaneously stimulating the cell renewal and improving the turnover of skin cells.
Exfoliation Options
Chemical Skin Peels
These are possibly the best known professional treatment for exfoliating the skin. A chemical solution is applied and left for a short time before removal, revealing brighter skin and stimulating cell renewal.
Clients can choose whether to have a mild, medium or intensive peel, depending on the results desired. Mild peels have the advantage of minimal downtime and visible peeling. Intensive peels can entail a few days redness and obvious shedding. However, they can deliver more dramatic results and go further in tackling more difficult issues such as pigmentation.

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion uses a mechanical method of exfoliating the skin, usually involving a machine with exfoliating crystals and vacuum to remove the outer skin cells as well as buildup of sebum and general grime. The result is skin that looks cleaner and brighter straightaway.
This involves minimal downtime if any and can achieve good results for patients with signs of ageing or sun damage, as it promotes the cell turnover as well as producing smoother skin and a more even complexion.

Laser Resurfacing
Mulberry House Clinic & Laser Centre offers true fractional non-ablative laser skin resurfacing treatment with ResurFX™ which uses light energy to stimulate the skin beneath its surface.
The treatment works in the lower dermis layers to stimulate collagen production and healing, improving a host of ageing concerns.

Microneedling
Microneedling is a technique which intentionally creates tiny little injuries to the skin in order to trigger its natural healing and growth responses. The treatment can stimulate collagen and elastin in order to improve the elasticity, texture and strength of the skin.
The creation of tiny little wounds also allows immediate delivery of serums or creams to penetrate beneath the epidermis and be absorbed at a deeper layer.
This technique is not as aggressive as it sounds – there are implements designed with smaller needles to tackle finer lines as well as options for more intensive results where issues such as acne scarring could be tackled.
