Botulinum Toxin
Botulinum toxin type A is an effective and well-established treatment for relaxing lines and wrinkles and creating smoother, younger-looking skin.
Without a doubt, BOTOX® is the best known brand of botulinum toxin. It has recently celebrated a 30 year anniversary and in the same year, exceeded production of over 100 million vials of the product.
However, while BOTOX® may be the biggest name, it is not necessarily the only one available.
Mulberry House Clinic offers a choice of 2 brands – BOTOX® and Bocouture. These have been selected by Dr John Tanqueray as they offer extremely high quality standards.
In fact, while BOTOX® is still available for patients who prefer it, Dr Tanqueray tends to recommend and use Bocouture, which he believes offers the cleanest and safest wrinkle-relaxing treatment available.

Key Point Comparison
The botulinum toxin molecule is virtually identical. This is the active ingredient which, when injected in the appropriate and precise areas, relaxes the muscle movements which cause lines and wrinkles to form. The key differences are:
- BOTOX® has a slightly different formulation, as there are added proteins surrounding the molecule. However, studies have suggested that this doesn’t add any benefit and may even increase the risk of antibodies developing that can (albeit rarely) prevent the product from being effective. There are no reported cases of this in patients who have only ever had Bocouture.
- Bocouture does not need to be kept refrigerated. This is more environmentally friendly as it reduces energy during transport and storage; but also eliminates any risks where product has not been kept cold.
Other Brands
Some providers may offer alternative brands and/or imported products that appear to be the same brand, but they may not meet the same standards and are not worth the potential saving. As UK aesthetics is in large part an unregulated market, it is important for clients to understand the risks and make informed and safe decisions.
