The Department of Health and Social Care has launched a new government campaign to increase awareness and understanding of cosmetic procedures.
The objective of the campaign is to make sure people know the risks of cosmetic procedures and how to manage those risks by finding good information in order to make informed decisions about their choices of procedure and practitioner.
Demand for cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX® anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers has risen consistently but experts are also concerned about the numbers of patients experiencing side effects or bad results.
The lack of regulation in the sector means that clients can be lured by practitioners who are not medically qualified in any way and/or not trained in cosmetic procedures. Many clients are surprised to learn that there are no legal requirements in the UK, for qualifications or training for those carrying out cosmetic procedure providers. Botulinum toxin (BOTOX®/Bocouture) must be first prescribed by a qualified prescriber. However, there is no requirement to have a prescription for dermal fillers and there are a lot of versions available. Some practitioners import from uncontrolled sources while others only use top brand from reputable UK pharmacies. It is important to understand what the product is as well as the credentials of the person who will be injecting it.
Increasing demand for cosmetic procedures makes aesthetic treatment an attractive business which unqualified persons can legally pursue. The demand also means that providers are increasingly using aggressive marketing techniques, including cut-price deals and Instagram advertising, to attract clients.
The Department of Health & Social Care campaign is using digital content and placing press adverts including Heat, Closer and Grazia magazines. The message is to ‘know your facts’ before making a decision with key information on the potential risks of treatment and advice on choosing a good practitioner:
Cosmetic Procedure Risks
“All cosmetic procedures have some risks and can impact on both your physical and emotional health. choose a safe, reputable and qualified practitioner who is trained in the procedure you’ve chosen.”
Choosing a Practitioner
“Look for someone who is either a regulated healthcare professional (such as a doctor or nurse) or registered with a body overseen by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).”
Your Consultation
“Before committing to any procedures, make sure you speak to a professional who should ask about your expectations and can talk you through what will happen.”
In Summary
“Ask questions and get all the information you need about the procedure, the practitioner and the products being used. Keep safe by making sure that you know how to obtain aftercare and support if things go wrong.”
