Menopause Skin

When hormonal changes affect the skin — and what can be done.

The skin changes that accompany perimenopause and menopause are among the most significant and least discussed aspects of this life stage. Many women notice that their skin has changed — that it feels different, behaves differently, and responds differently to the products and treatments that worked before — without fully understanding why, or knowing that effective options exist.

Oestrogen plays a fundamental role in skin health. It stimulates collagen and elastin production, supports the skin’s lipid barrier, maintains hydration, and influences the skin’s thickness, firmness and elasticity. As oestrogen levels decline during perimenopause and menopause, the skin loses these benefits relatively rapidly. The changes can be striking — and they tend to accelerate in the years immediately around menopause.

Common skin changes associated with hormonal decline include increased dryness and sensitivity as the lipid barrier weakens, accelerated collagen loss leading to thinning, crepiness and reduced firmness, loss of elasticity and the development of new fine lines, increased laxity particularly around the jaw and neck, changes in pigmentation and skin tone, increased flushing and sensitivity, and in some cases adult acne driven by the relative increase in androgen activity as oestrogen declines.

These changes do not all happen at once and do not affect every patient equally — genetics, lifestyle, sun exposure history and skincare habits all influence how significantly hormonal changes manifest in the skin. But for many women the menopause transition represents the most significant period of skin change in their adult lives.

Treatments to consider.

Addressing menopausal skin changes requires a whole-skin approach — combining the right professional skincare with clinical treatments that target the specific changes the skin is undergoing. There is no single treatment that addresses everything, but a well-considered plan can make a significant and lasting difference.

Skin boosters are one of the most effective treatments for the dryness, thinning and loss of quality associated with hormonal skin changes. Profhilo delivers deep hydration and triggers bioremodelling, improving firmness, elasticity and overall skin quality. Polynucleotides repair at a cellular level and restore the skin’s own capacity to retain moisture. Collagen stimulating treatments — Sculptra®, Radiesse® Dilute and Gouri® — address the accelerated collagen loss of menopause, rebuilding structural quality progressively over time. Dermal fillers restore volume where loss has become significant. Tixel® and microneedling stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture and firmness. Professional skincare is the essential daily foundation — the right regime supports the skin through hormonal changes and maintains the results of clinical treatment.
