Broken Veins
Visible capillaries and thread veins.
Broken veins — also called thread veins, spider veins or telangiectasia — are small, permanently dilated blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin. They appear as fine red, pink or purple lines, most commonly on the cheeks, nose and chin, and can range from a single visible vessel to a network of fine capillaries covering a significant area of the face.
The walls of small capillaries weaken over time, losing their ability to contract after dilating in response to heat, cold or pressure. Contributing factors include chronic sun exposure, rosacea, genetics, extremes of temperature, alcohol consumption and hormonal changes. Skin that is fair or has thinned with age shows broken veins more readily.
Treatments to consider.
IPL is the most effective non-surgical treatment for broken veins on the face. The light energy is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood vessel, generating heat that causes the vessel wall to collapse and be reabsorbed naturally. Most patients see significant improvement after a course of two to four treatments.
