7 Signs That Acne is Healing

acne treatmentsMany adults struggle with acne in the UK and most will initially try to treat it themselves with carefully chosen skincare products or formulations available over the counter in the chemist.

Treating acne is important as it will reduce the likelihood of long-term scarring, as well as improving your sense of wellbeing and confidence.

So how do you know if what you’re doing is actually working?

As an ARA accredited acne treatment centre, we’ve noticed a number of people visiting this website for information on signs that acne is healing, so we thought we’d put together some advice.

7 signs that acne is healing

  1. Larger cysts and pustules crust over
Acne cysts are deep, pus filled bumps that are very noticeable. Pustules are smaller and tend to be red, inflamed with a white pus-filled centre.
When these start to crust over, that is a sign that your treatment is starting to control the acne
  2. Nodules retreat
Acne nodules are hard bumps beneath the skin. There is not necessarily a ‘spot’ but they can be quite tender and make the skin feel lumpy and uneven. When nodules start to lessen, that is a great sign as it indicates that acne is healing beneath the skin
  3. Reduction in ‘redness’
Acne troubled skin can go quite red when there is a flareup. It is the skin’s inflammatory response. When the skin starts to take on a more normal hue, it is a sign that inflammation is improving
  4. Fewer new spots appearing
The acne healing process is not quick and you’re likely to find that as some spots heal and disappear, new spots still keep appearing. This can be frustrating, but is fairly normal. However, what you’re looking for is a gentle reduction in the number of spots – so you have fewer and fewer as time goes on
  5. Less severe spots/cysts
As well as seeing fewer spots, as acne heals, you’d hope to see the severity of the spots reducing. So they’d be smaller, less ‘angry’ looking and less painful. Fewer cysts/nodules and more of a rash
  6. Skin appears less oily
It is the build-up of sebum and dead skin cells which blocks pores and allows bacteria to breed. Reduction in oiliness is a sign that sebum production is becoming more balanced, creating conditions that are less conducive to acne. However, be aware of overly harsh acne treatments; as some can be very drying and that can actually trigger a reaction in the skin
  7. Reduction in blackheads/whiteheads
Blackheads and whiteheads appear before a pimple. They are caused by microscopic amounts of dirt/debris trapped in the pores by sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. When you notice the number of blackheads and whiteheads going down, that’s a sure sign that there should be fewer spots and cysts on the horizon

Things to be aware of…

Firstly it’s important to recognise that acne can be a persistent condition and can take time to heal.

What’s more, you may find that as some of the spots heal, others start to appear.

Without guidance from an acne specialist it is not always easy to know whether the acne is healing or actually getting worse.

What to do if acne is not healing?

If in doubt, it’s best to seek expert advice.

You could see your GP, who may prescribe tablets or refer you to a dermatologist. However, tablets can have unpleasant side effects and waiting lists for dermatologist referral can be long and subject to stringent criteria.

Alternatively, there are acne treatment options available in specialist skin and acne treatment clinics such as Mulberry House Clinic.

Some work to destroy the bacteria that cause acne breakouts, some provide intensive exfoliation and many of the treatments also work to promote skin regeneration, healing and recovery; helping the skin to become healthier going forward and more resilient to future inflammations.

The Acne & Rosacea Association UK is a registered charity which aims to improve the management of these diseases by training Doctors, Nurses and Pharmacists on the best ways of treating them and solutions.

Mulberry House Clinic has met the organisation’s criteria by offering comprehensive range of treatments dedicated to helping those with acne, as well as its after effects including acne scarring.

Many skin clinics have little to offer for acne, preferring instead to focus on popular anti-ageing injectables.

Acne can be a complex condition, but Mulberry House Clinic, the clinic has a very medical bias. It was established by former GP Dr John Tanqueray along with former SRN nurse Liz Tanqueray. With a medical background, the clinic team have always been keen to provide solutions for common skin health issues as well as anti-ageing and beautification.

We recognise that acne can have a devastating effect on an individual, with psychological implications as well as physical, which is why we pursued ARA accreditation.
