Chemical Exfoliation

If you haven't had a peel before, our article explains step by step what to expect in the clinic.  A chemical peel is an option for brightening and stimulating the skin by sloughing off dead skin cells. Chemical agents work to loosen and lift off the outer layer of skin and debris, revealing newer skin cells beneath. However, the actual step by step procedure tends to be the same whatever the strength of peel that is chosen.

Step By Step Facial Peel Process

1. Cleansing

   The face is fully cleansed prior to treatment, to remove any exterior debris

2. Degreasing

   An alcohol-based solution is used to remove any surface grease from the skin so that the peel agent can act as efficiently as possible

3. Protective Gel

   A special gel may be applied to delicate areas if they require protection e.g. nasolabial folds

4. Peel Application

   The practitioner applies the peel and times how long it is left on very carefully. This is based on the strength of peel and close observation of the skin's response

5. Neutralisation

   At the end of the time (or sooner if the skin's response indicates) the peel is neutralise and washed off with warm water and gentle sponges.

6. Application of Product

   After the peel has been fully removed, the skin is super-receptive to any products applied. A combination of serums and moisturisers will be delivered to soothe and hydrate the skin

For dull, lacklustre skin, choosing a light chemical peel can create an instant glow and may also improve fine lines. More intensive peels not only brighten the skin but can also boost collagen too and could improve acne symptoms such as excessive oiliness, open pores or even scarring. Even difficult pigmentation problems can be improved with a professional chemical peel. Results do vary and a course of peels is often more effective than a 'one-off', although this does also depend on the peel chosen, condition being treated and individual skin condition.
