COVID Vaccine With Anti-Wrinkle Injections, IPL or Laser

BOTOX Syringe

What happens if you’re called for your coronavirus vaccine just after BOTOX®, laser, IPL or peel – or just before you’re due to have injections or treatment?

Cosmetic treatment experts and industry bodies have issued guidelines for dermal fillers after a few cases of swelling that were related to dermal fillers and the COVID-19 vaccination. The advice is that it is best to leave a 2 week interval before having dermal fillers and 3 weeks after in order to minimise the risks of post-inflammatory swelling or reaction.

For more information please see our previous blog Dermal Fillers & COVID Vaccine Guidelines.

Some clients are wondering whether there is any similar advice for other popular non-surgical anti-ageing treatments. The good news is that there are NO such restrictions or limitations on having other non-surgical treatments at present. Moreover, it seems unlikely that there would be any similar potential for adverse reactions.

When would I need to delay cosmetic treatments after coronavirus vaccine?

This is only a consideration for dermal fillers. You should leave a 3 week delay after the immunisation.

There is no need to delay any other non-surgical treatment due to the vaccine unless you feel unwell.

Please contact us for advice if you are having a treatment plan which combines dermal fillers with other treatments as well, so that we can suggest whether it would be best to split the sessions or delay the work.

Why are non-filler treatments OK?

The key difference with dermal fillers is that the filler stays under the skin for an extended period.

By comparison, BOTOX® or botulinum toxin treatments such as Bocouture are quickly absorbed into the body, leaving muscles relaxed and wrinkles smoothed.

Non-injectable treatments such as laser, IPL, chemical peels, ultrasound or thermal fractional rejuvenation do not inject any substances into the skin at all. Instead, they act on the skin from the outside, which is unlikely to have any impact on the timing of your coronavirus vaccine.

Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are intense exfoliation treatments that remove the outer layer of dead skin cells.

Other treatments such as laser, IPL, TIXEL thermal fractional rejuvenation and ultrasound (Ultherapy) deliver energy to the deeper layers of the skin in order to stimulate renewal, recovery and rejuvenation.

Should I delay vaccination after non-surgical treatments?

There is absolutely no reason to delay your immunisation after BOTOX® or any of the non-injectable treatment options.

It is recommended to leave 2 weeks after dermal fillers BUT if you’ve had dermal fillers and are called for your vaccine, then experts say that it is better to leave less than delay your immunisation

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery guidelines state:

“Patients already treated with dermal fillers should not be discouraged or precluded from receiving vaccines of any kind.”

Even though there have been a few cases of reaction associated with fillers and COVID immunisation, the benefits of getting protection from coronavirus through the vaccine outweigh the relatively low potential risks of possible reaction with filler.
