Acne Scarring
Lasting marks from a condition you may have left behind.
Acne scarring is one of the most common and least straightforward skin concerns we treat. For many patients it is the final chapter of a long relationship with acne — the physical reminder that remains once the active condition is finally under control. For others, scarring developed years or even decades ago and has simply been accepted as permanent. It doesn't have to be.
The key principle is this: acne scarring should only be treated once the active acne is well managed. Treating scarring on skin that is still breaking out will not produce lasting results. If you are still dealing with active acne, the right starting point is our Acne page.
Acne scarring takes several forms. Atrophic scars are the most common — indentations in the skin caused by a loss of tissue during healing, including icepick scars, boxcar scars and rolling scars. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — flat areas of darker pigmentation left after an inflamed spot — responds well to skincare and lighter treatments and tends to fade with time. Post-inflammatory erythema — persistent redness after acne — responds well to IPL and laser treatments.
Treatments to consider.
Acne scarring rarely responds to a single treatment. The most effective approach is usually a course of one or more of the following, tailored to the type and depth of scarring.
Tixel® — thermal fractional treatment that stimulates deep collagen remodelling. Highly effective for textural scarring once active acne is fully controlled.
Microneedling — collagen induction therapy that remodels scar tissue and improves skin texture progressively over a course of treatments. One of the most effective options for atrophic scarring.
Chemical Peels — help clear congestion, reduce oiliness, and improve overall skin clarity.
ResurFX™ Laser Skin Resurfacing — for active acne and skin quality improvement.
Professional Skincare — an essential foundation. The right skincare regime supports the skin between treatments, manages oil production and congestion, and helps prevent new scarring.
Not sure where to start?
Results from acne scarring treatment are cumulative — a course of treatment is always recommended rather than a single session. Significant improvement is achievable for most patients; we will always be honest about what can be achieved for your specific concern.
