Understanding Lip Ageing
Lip ageing isn't really about the lips alone — it's a structural change. The fat pads within the lips naturally diminish over time, the supporting bone remodels slightly, and the philtrum tends to lengthen, causing the lip to rotate gently inward. The visible result is often reduced lip projection, a softer border, a less pronounced cupid's bow, and lips that look thinner even without dramatic volume loss.
Separately, but often alongside it, fine vertical lines can develop above the upper lip — perioral lines — from repeated muscle movement, volume loss in the surrounding skin, and gradual thinning, commonly accelerated by smoking, sun exposure, and repeated lip pursing. Some people also notice the corners of the mouth turning down, adding to an overall more tired look around the mouth.
