Enlarged Pores

Reducing the appearance of visible pores.

Pores cannot be permanently closed or eliminated — they are a necessary part of the skin’s structure, allowing sebum to reach the surface. But their appearance can be significantly improved. Enlarged or prominently visible pores are one of the most common skin concerns, particularly across the nose, cheeks and chin, and they respond well to the right combination of treatments and skincare.

Several factors make pores appear larger than they need to. Excess sebum stretches the pore opening and keeps it visibly dilated. Congestion — the accumulation of dead skin cells, oxidised sebum and debris within the pore — enlarges it further and can cause it to appear darker. Loss of collagen with age reduces the support structure around the pore, allowing it to widen and lose its shape. Sun damage accelerates this collagen breakdown.

Enlarged pores and oily skin often go together — if excess sebum is also a concern, this is worth discussing at consultation as the two conditions share several effective treatments.

Treatments to consider.

Microdermabrasion removes the surface congestion blocking and enlarging pores, producing immediate improvement in pore appearance and skin clarity. Chemical peels accelerate cell turnover and clear congestion within the pore, reducing its visible size. Microneedling stimulates collagen production around the pore structure, physically tightening the pore opening over a course of treatments. Tixel® remodels skin structure and visibly tightens pores. LED Skin Therapy using the blue light wavelength reduces sebum production and bacterial activity within the pore. Professional skincare — daily use of salicylic acid, retinol and sebum-regulating ingredients — is the most effective ongoing strategy for keeping pores clear and minimising their appearance.
