Microdermabrasion: A Complete Guide

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine crystals and a vacuum to remove dead skin cells.

The chief benefit of microdermabrasion is exfoliation. It works to strip away the outer layer of skin to reveal fresher, clearer skin beneath.

How does microdermabrasion work?

During a microdermabrasion treatment, the practitioner will use a handheld device to gently exfoliate the skin. The device emits a stream of fine crystals that remove the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. The vacuum then suctions away the crystals and dead skin cells.

It is a mechanical treatment and appeals to those that don’t like the idea of a chemical peel.

Who is microdermabrasion for?

Microdermabrasion is a popular treatment which can be used for a variety of skin concerns.

It is safe for most skin types, including sensitive skin.

It is especially beneficial for people with the following skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots and sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation (dark spots)
  • Acne scars
  • Large pores
  • Dull, uneven skin tone

What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion offers a number of benefits, including:

  • Smoother, softer skin
  • Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Evened out skin tone
  • Reduced appearance of age spots and sun damage
  • Reduced appearance of acne scars and large pores
  • Brighter, more radiant complexion

Are there any risks to microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a very safe procedure. It can also be adjusted as required to provide a gentler or more intense exfoliation. Potential side effects tend to be minor and relatively short-lived, although the risks do increase for more intensive procedures. Side-effects may include:

  • Redness and irritation
  • Dryness
  • Peeling
  • Skin sensitivity

These side effects are usually mild and temporary.

Aftercare

After microdermabrasion, it is important to follow a skincare routine to help your skin heal and prevent complications. The level of aftercare required will vary depending on the intensity of the treatment.

Gentle Microdermabrasion Aftercare

If you had a gentle microdermabrasion treatment, your skin may be slightly red or irritated for a few days. You may also experience some dryness and peeling. To soothe your skin and promote healing, follow these aftercare tips:

  • Wash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day.
  • Apply fragrance-free and hypoallergenic moisturiser
  • Avoid using harsh skincare products, such as scrubs or exfoliants.
  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day.
  • Avoid sun exposure, swimming, and saunas for at least 48 hours.

Intensive Microdermabrasion Aftercare

If you had an intensive microdermabrasion treatment, your skin may be more red, irritated, and swollen than after a gentle treatment. You may also experience more peeling and scabbing. The above aftercare tips apply, but in addition, to help your skin heal properly, follow these aftercare tips:

  • Apply an intensive ointment, barrier cream or petroleum jelly  to the treated area to help protect it and prevent scabbing.
  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher every day.

If you experience any severe side effects after microdermabrasion, get in touch with your provider for advice.

Additional Tips After Microdermabrasion

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Eat a healthy diet to promote skin healing.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, as these can slow down the healing process.
  • Get enough sleep.
