MPs Call to Make Dermal Fillers ‘Prescription Only’

parliament legislationA group of MPs are calling to create  much-needed legislation around dermal fillers, making them prescription only and requiring practitioners to have regulated qualifications.

The current lack of regulation around dermal fillers has been raised numerous times in the media with experts saying that this exposes the public to risks.

Many patients assume that those carrying out dermal fillers will have undergone some kind of training or qualification, but this is not the case. There are no requirements of any kind and literally anybody can legally carry out dermal fillers.

All-Party Parliamentary Group on Beauty, Aesthetics and Wellbeing

MPs belonging to the all parliamentary group have made a series of recommendations and statements about how the situation should be improved:

  • Dermal fillers should be prescription only
  • Patients should have a face-to-face consultation with a medical professional
  • The same practitioner should oversee treatment to ensure they can provide remedial treatment if necessary
  • Injectors should be legally required to have regulated qualifications
  • The government should establish a national licensing scheme for non-surgical cosmetic treatments
  • There should be restrictions around advertising of dermal fillers
  • Clients should undergo mandatory psychological pre-screening prior to treatment
  • Appropriate practitioners’ insurance should be compulsory

Professor David Sines from the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners welcomed the news, but stressed that there is more to be done:

“I welcome the APPG report, and I would urge the health minister, Nadine Dorries MP, to act on the recommendations as quickly as possible.

“It is clear, however, that the government needs to go further.

“It is increasingly apparent that at this time high-risk procedures, like the injection of toxins and the insertion of dermal fillers should only be administered by healthcare professionals who have the necessary skills, qualifications and competence in these areas.”

Nadine Dorries MP, who is currently Minister of State (Department of Health and Social Care), said:

“This report is an important contribution to our shared understanding of the consequences of this kind of treatment and I look forward to reviewing its recommendations on how we continue to improve people’s safety.

“Anyone considering Botox, or fillers, should pause and take the time they need to consider the potential impact of surgery on both their physical and mental health, and take steps to ensure they are using a reputable, safe and qualified practitioner.”
