Retinols – a ‘Magic Bullet’ for Skin Care

Retinols are the closest thing we have to a magic bullet for addressing problems associated with ageing and sun damage!

That’s what Dr John Tanqueray says in Mulberry House Clinic & Laser Centre’s latest skin knowledge video which introduces Retinols.

Retinol is an active skin care ingredient which is known to be effective in reversing the signs of aging skin. It is a derivative of vitamin A and works to reduce lines, wrinkles, and unwanted pigmentation.

Benefits of Retinol

Dr John Tanqueray outlines the key benefits of Retinol:

  • increasing cell turnover
  • making the skin smoother and firmer
  • reversing some of the effects of sun exposure
  • evening out pigmentation

ZO Skin Health prescription skincare is available at Mulberry House Clinic, Northamptonshire.

ZO Skin Health Retinols

Dr. Zein Obagi, founder of ZO Skin Health is a huge proponent of using retinol in your daily skincare regimen.

“To evaluate whether an ingredient or formulation can deliver what it promises, we have to look at the science.”

Retinol, when applied to the skin, works by stimulating new collagen formation as well as preventing the breakdown of existing collagen. It has been clinically proven to have a stimulatory effect on the fibroblasts that produce collagen, as well as an inhibitory effect on enzymes that break down the collagen support structure.

Retinol’s molecular structure is small enough to allow it to penetrate the skin’s epidermis or outer layer to reach the dermis where it can get to work and have a significant effect on the quality, tone, and texture of the skin. This is a limiting factor for many other skincare ingredients, as large molecules cannot penetrate the skin and just sit on top of the outermost layer and cannot be effective.

ZO Skin Health offers 4 types/concentrations of Retinol to target different areas of the skin.

Retinol can cause initial side effects such as redness/dryness initially, but once the skin has adapted noticeable results will develop.
