Rosacea

A common but frequently mismanaged skin condition — and one we treat with real expertise.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the face — characterised by persistent redness, flushing, visible blood vessels, and in some cases spots, pustules and skin thickening. It affects an estimated one in ten people in the UK, is more common in fair-skinned individuals, and tends to develop between the ages of 30 and 50. It is more common in women, though it often presents more severely in men.

Mulberry House Clinic is the only Acne and Rosacea Association (ARA) Accredited Treatment Centre within a 10-mile radius of Northampton — an accreditation that reflects the depth of knowledge and quality of care our team brings to the management of rosacea.

Rosacea is not simply a cosmetic concern. The persistent redness and flushing it causes can significantly affect confidence and quality of life. It is also a progressive condition — without appropriate management, it tends to worsen over time. Early, consistent treatment makes a meaningful difference to both its appearance and its progression.

Rosacea presents differently in different patients. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea — the most common subtype — is characterised by persistent central facial redness and visible capillaries, with episodes of flushing triggered by heat, alcohol, spicy food, exercise and stress. Papulopustular rosacea presents with spots and pustules alongside redness, and is frequently confused with acne. Phymatous rosacea — less common — causes skin thickening, most notably on the nose. Ocular rosacea affects the eyes, causing irritation and sensitivity.

Treatments to consider.

Rosacea management requires a combination of trigger avoidance, appropriate skincare and clinical treatment. There is no cure, but the condition can be effectively controlled — reducing both the frequency and severity of flares and the persistent background redness that affects patients between episodes.

IPL is one of the most effective clinical treatments for rosacea — targeting the dilated blood vessels responsible for persistent redness and flushing, causing them to collapse and be reabsorbed naturally. A course of treatments produces progressive and lasting improvement in redness and visible capillaries, with many patients finding that regular maintenance significantly reduces both the frequency and intensity of flares over time. LED red light therapy reduces inflammation and soothes reactive skin, making it a valuable complement to IPL and a useful standalone maintenance treatment. Professional skincare is the essential foundation — rosacea-prone skin requires a gentle, barrier-supporting regime that avoids common irritants and includes daily SPF. ZO Skin Health offers targeted products specifically formulated for rosacea-prone skin.
