Dermal Fillers Brands – How to Choose

juvedermIn the UK, the choice of dermal fillers products available is vast with over a hundred on the market, so it can be quite confusing for those contemplating treatment.

Yet this is not a time to ‘plump’ for the cheapest product on offer.

Firstly, be aware of why there are so many to choose from. Despite moves to bring in regulation, the dermal fillers market is still as yet unregulated in the UK. It is estimated that over 160 different products are available in the UK whereas in the USA, fewer than 10 are FDA approved for cosmetic use. So with no controls in place, choose carefully.

The second important piece of advice is to select a temporary filler. Most dermal fillers used in the UK today are temporary or resorbable products which are far safer in use than the permanent fillers or collagen filler products that previously hit the headlines.

So the best advice for UK patients is to choose reputable branded temporary fillers which are ideally approved in the USA where they have to meet stringent standards in order to be licensed for use.

Top UK brands of fillers include the popular Juvéderm range of fillers by Allergan. This range has a number of different types of filler to suit different purposes.

  • Juvéderm® SMILE is designed for adding volume to the lip area.
  • Juvéderm® VOLUMA is a relatively new product ideal for use in larger areas for a general replenishment.
  • Juvéderm® ULTRA 2, 3 and 4 are the original multi-purpose product for filling lines and creases such as the ageing nose to mouth lines. Juvéderm® Ultra was the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler to include the anaesthetic lidocaine in its formulation for a comfortable injecting experience.

The third factor to consider is finding a practitioner who is skilled and experienced. Surprisingly, fillers can still be administered by unqualified and untrained persons. Check the credentials of your practitioner carefully. Medical qualifications are not legally required, but would certainly reassure any patient that their practitioner is safe to wield a syringe. In addition, finding somebody who has had specific additional training in dermal fillers, extensive experience in the field and a good aesthetic eye as well as medical knowledge is the ideal combination.
