Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a skin resurfacing treatment which exfoliates and stimulates the skin by using mildly abrasive crystals and a vacuum pressure. In essence, this is a mechanical peel rather than a chemical one.

After microdermabrasion, we apply good moisturising creams or serums. These are very readily absorbed by the skin after treatment for greater effect and leave the skin feeling soft and refreshed.

The effects over a course of treatment are an improvement in skin smoothness and texture, reduction of fine lines, and improvement in blackheads and acne outbreaks.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion can improve the skin in general and is of potential benefit to a range of common problems and conditions, including:

  • fine lines
  • enlarged or clogged pores
  • blackheads, spots, acne
  • complexion and uneven skin tone
  • sun damage
  • age spots, pigmentation problems
  • oily skin
  • dry/patchy skin
  • dull, lifeless skin

In general, microdermabrasion results in healthier, more youthful looking skin which is brighter, fresher and more radiant.

Longer Term Benefits

Over the course of a full set of treatments, the repeated intensive exfoliation stimulates the body to produce new skin cells. The new layers of skin contain higher levels of elastin and collagen, which improves the tone of the skin as well as boosting complexion for a more radiant, vibrant glow.

Microdermabrasion With Chemical Peel

At Mulberry House Clinic, we often combine microdermabrasion with a course of chemical peels. This gives more flexibility in the treatment approach and a stronger overall result.

This combination of microdermabrasion with peels offers pleasant treatments that make a short and medium-term difference to your skin.

FAQs

Microdermabrasion Frequently Asked Questions

Microdermabrasion is a treatment for exfoliating and stimulating the skin for a smoother, fresher look. Over time it can also improve fine lines, and helps acne. Aluminium oxide crystals are passed over the skin under a vacuum, the strength of which can be controlled to suit your skin.

It is not a painful treatment, and most people find it quite pleasant.

Initially, you may feel a very mild scratching sensation as the crystals make contact with the skin, but this is not too uncomfortable and patients comment that they can ‘feel it working’.

Microdermabrasion is particularly satisfying for the patient as the skin is immediately and noticeably fresher. Results improve with repeated treatments and there is a longer term benefit with the boost to production of new skin cells, collagen and elastin.

For most people a course of 6 treatments is ideal, followed by further treatments from time to time. If you are having treatment for acne or scarring a longer course may be necessary.

Treatments are usually done one to two weeks apart.

After-effects can be none up to some minor redness for up to 24 hours, depending on the strength of the treatment given.

Usually the skin looks a little flushed afterwards for a few hours. After a more vigorous treatment there may be some redness for up to 24 hours, but this can be covered with a suitable camouflage makeup if necessary.

No, patients can return straight to normal activities. This is one of the great advantages of microdermabrasion treatment.

Yes, cosmetics can be applied directly after treatment.

As an intense exfoliation, microdermabrasion exposes fresher, newer skin cells. We therefore advise caution with regard to the sun. Avoid exposure where possible, especially at peak times; and ensure a good sunscreen at all times.

Some patients say that their skin feels tight or dry in response to treatment – as if it had been in the sun or wind.

We do apply good moisturising creams or serums after treatment which not only relieve the sensation of dryness but are also very readily absorbed by the skin after treatment for greater effect.

Microdermabrasion is generally considered to be very safe, provided that a good machine is used abiding to the relevant safety standards. Unlike laser or IPL, the procedure is not traumatic to the skin at all.

At Mulberry House Clinic, treatments are carried out by former senior nurse Liz Tanqueray.

This will depend on the area being treated, but generally around half an hour. That’s why some practitioners refer to it as a ‘lunchtime treatment’.

It can be very helpful, as it works by stripping away the top layer of skin and leaving pores clean. It also stimulates the skin’s own renewal processes, making it healthier.

By removing the top layer of the skin, professional microdermabrasion can diminish superficial acne scarring. However, results will depend on the extent of damage.

Deeper acne scarring requires a more invasive procedure, like a deep chemical peel or combination of microdermabrasion and peel.

We can also offer laser skin resurfacing, Dermaroller or even dermal fillers for severe acne scarring.

We’d recommend a consultation in the first instance to assess your skin and advise on the best route forward.
