Tech Neck, How Modern Life is Ageing You

tech neck

Dermatologists have warned that bending the neck to read messages or watch the iPad is affecting the way that the skin ages, leading to a condition known as tech-neck, involving symptoms that could include:

  • loose, saggy skin
  • pronounced, droopy jowls
  • development of a noticeable crease above the clavicle
  • lines and creases in and around the lower face – especially the chin and neck area where skin is naturally thinner

In modern life, most of us have become inseparable from our tech with smartphones and tablets being on hand throughout the day as we keep up with friends, family, work and the world in general. This extensive use of technology has already been blamed for keeping us up at night, making us sleep less well and creating a series of posture problems as we bend to look at the screen.

Dr Christopher Rowland Payne, Consultant Dermatologist at The London Clinic, said:

“The problem of wrinkles and sagging of the jowls and neck used to begin in late middle age but, in the last 10 years, because of ‘tech-neck’, it has become a problem for a generation of younger women.”

“Neck skin is exposed to sun every day because of low necklines, especially in women, but people are less inclined to think of protecting their necks than their faces,” Dr Rowland Payne.

“This is bad news for neck skin as it starts off finer and sun thins it further. Finer skin wrinkles more readily and the fat of the neck may sag.”

The surprise with ‘tech neck’ symptoms is that they are being seen in much younger adults, thanks to their higher use of technology. 18-39 year olds now have an average 3 devices and can look at the screen over 100 times a day.
